Geography/location
- Rome was built on seven hills at the bank of the tiber river.
- Rome is around the center of the italian peninsula.
- Italy had many hills and mountains but were easier to travel over than the mountains on Greece.
- Due to this Rome and the rest of Italy turned inland for trade and communicated more often giving them a united government opposed to Greece's city-states.
- Most of the land around Rome was also fertile allowing the Romans to farm.
- Most of the rivers around Rome were shallow so they easy to cross.
- Since the most water was shallow around Rome, the romans were not master sailors as the Greeks were and they became easy targets for pirates.
- Modern day Rome is in the Lazio region.
Region
- The region of the Roman empire, after they stopped expanding, was about half of Europe, some of modern day middle east, and northern tip of Africa.
- The main city of the empire was Rome until emperor Constantine changed it on 330 A.D. to Byzantium (later renamed Constantinople)
- In 410 A.D. the western part of the Roman empire officially collapsed leaving only a weaken east side.
- Official Roman empire collapsed in 476 A.D. replaced by the byzantines.
